There are many diets out there today, each claiming to be better than the other. But sometimes we don’t realize that the best things in life are the oldest ones. What about our ancestors? What did they eat? Well, today the diet of our ancestors is known as the paleolithic diet, and it is gaining momentum everywhere. Today, people who follow the diet mirror the ancient paleo menu of the cavemen. This menu consisted of natural foods such as lean meats, chicken, seafood, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats.
There are many benefits of the following a paleolithic menu. Some people have reported that they experienced weight loss, a stronger immune system, and improvement in digestion, energy levels and blood sugar control. The theory of the paleo diet is that once you eliminate foods that our body haven’t adapted to such as grains, dairy products, sugar, and processed foods, you will experience a healthier lifestyle. Many Diseases such as cancer, diabetes and obesity are caused by eating foods that we are not genetically designed to it. If you think about it, the cases of such diseases only started being identified a few hundred years ago. The caveman didn’t have to worry about such diseases because his menu didn’t include harmful foods.
If you do decide to follow a paleo menu, make sure that you replace your baked foods with fresh fruits or muffins. Keep in mind that your meals will mostly consist of meat, cooked vegetables (except potatoes) and a salad. It might sound like you won’t be satisfied but trust me when I say it’ll fill you up. For snacks you can eat fruits, berries of all kinds, and seeds and nuts. You can even make a paleo smoothie by blending almond or coconut milk combined with fruits or berries of your choice. You can also include nut butters such as almond or cashew for some flavor.
It is easy to follow the paleo menu when you are in the comfort of your home, but what about when you go out to a restaurant to eat? Some people find that restaurant menu’s don’t cater to the paleo diet and that can put you in an awkward situation if you are out on a date or with your friends. If you do find yourself in this situation, you can order plain meat without breading, and some vegetables on the side. Also remember to keep acceptable paleo foods on hand in your car, purse, or backpack.
It might be challenging at first, but once your body get’s used to the paleo menu, the process will be much easier. If you follow the diet and partake in exercise once in a while, you will be on your way to experiencing a healthier and happier life.
